Welcome back to the MotorTrend Channel, where for the last 15 years Steve Manyati has been espousing something called Funny Car Folk Art. This is about hot rodding, making model cars the way you want it, and it all starts with altering the wheelbase. This is a free-form fever of building, and all you need is a base kit, a donor kit, and a box full of parts and a head full of imagination.
On this episode, we’re taking Ravel’s 1967 Chevelle SS 396 and turning it into a Funny Car Folk Art piece. We’ll be altering the wheelbase, adding a big block engine, and using a floating front suspension like the cars in the middle of a wheelie. The beauty of Funny Car Folk Art is that there are no rules – you can make these things whatever you want.
Altering the wheelbase started in 1965 courtesy of Chrysler Corporation. They took advantage of the NHRA rule book that forbade the moving of the engine in the chassis, so they moved the rear axle forward, which effectively puts more static and dynamic weight on the rear tires of the car and increases traction.
