The Lexus RX450 Plus plug-in hybrid is a refined and comfortable SUV that aims to bridge the gap between a full EV and a traditional hybrid. It boasts a quiet and well-built interior, with high-quality materials and thoughtful storage options. However, there are some design choices that leave much to be desired, such as the cheap-looking wood veneer that resembles something you'd find in a discount furniture store. The technology in the RX450 Plus is a mixed bag, with finicky safety systems and laggy digital door handles that can be frustrating to use.
Under the hood, the RX450 Plus shares its drivetrain with the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Lexus NX plug-in hybrid, but it offers a more luxurious driving experience. With a 2.5L naturally aspirated gas engine and three electric motors, it delivers a total system output of 304 horsepower. While the EV-only range is a bit limited at 36-38 miles, the plug-in hybrid system is one of the best in the industry.
On the road, the RX450 Plus impresses with its excellent ride quality and isolation. It's a comfortable cruiser that excels at keeping the occupants comfortable and isolated from the outside world. However, it falls short in terms of handling dynamics compared to its German rivals. The lack of adaptive dampers is a noticeable omission at this price point.
Speaking of price, the RX450 Plus starts at around $70,000, which is quite steep considering the competition. While it may not offer the same level of luxury and features as its rivals, it does have the advantage of holding its value well over time. So, if you're in the market for a hybrid SUV and prioritize long-term ownership and reliability, the RX450 Plus might be worth considering. However, if you're looking for a more dynamic and feature-rich option, there are better choices available, such as the BMW X5e.
