Ah, the new Renault Cleo, with its fresh design tweaks and Alpine M Sporty equipment level. Renault manages to keep the price competitive, offering a choice between a 1L turbo petrol and a 1.6L petrol hybrid. The hybrid version proves to be the better performer, hitting 0 to 60 in a respectable 8.6 seconds. Pricing varies, starting at £18,000 for the entry-level petrol and £21,600 for the hybrid, undercutting competitors by £2,000. The top-spec Alpine version comes in at around £25,000, offering a mix of sporty details and quality concerns in the interior.
On the outside, the Cleo boasts a redesigned front end, new LED lights, and a range of wheel options. Its compact size makes it a breeze to navigate through city streets, although visibility and suspension could use some improvement. The hybrid model impresses with its electric-only driving capability and responsive acceleration. Tech features include an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the graphics can be sluggish. The range-topping model offers a digital driver's display, while lower trims get a smaller screen.
Practicality is decent, with a spacious boot in the standard Cleo and various storage options inside. The car handles well through corners, providing an enjoyable driving experience. However, the firm suspension may compromise comfort on longer journeys. Fuel economy falls short of expectations, averaging 38 MPG instead of the claimed 67 MPG. Adaptive cruise control is limited to the top-spec Alpine version, and some design quirks like a small rear window wiper and whistling ventilation fan may irk potential buyers. Despite these drawbacks, the Cleo offers unique features like quick-release backrests, customizable ambient lighting, and vegan-friendly interior materials, making it a compelling choice in its segment.
